CNC Custom Machining Price: Factors That Determine Cost

What Drives CNC Custom Machining Price

Price is the first question most clients ask about CNC custom machining. That makes sense — nobody wants to overpay. But the real question isn't "how much does it cost." It's "how do I get the best value for my budget." I've quoted thousands of custom machining jobs at AOOM. Here's what I tell every client about understanding the cost breakdown.

The Main Cost Drivers

Four factors determine the price of any CNC custom machining job. Material is the first. 6061 aluminum runs much less than titanium or Inconel. The material cost shows up in the quote as a line item. Second is part complexity. A simple bracket with four holes is cheap. A contoured housing with threaded bores, undercuts, and tight tolerances costs more because it takes more machine time and more setups.

Third is quantity. A single prototype involves setup time spread over one part. A production run of 500 spreads that same setup cost 500 ways. Per-unit price drops as quantity increases. Fourth is surface finish and secondary operations. As-machined finish is the baseline. Anodizing, plating, powder coating, or passivation add cost but add function and appearance too.

How We Keep Pricing Transparent

Many shops send a single number with no breakdown. We don't work that way. Our quotes show material cost, setup fees, machine time, inspection charges, and secondary operations as separate items. That way you see exactly where your money goes. If a cost seems high, we explain why and offer alternatives.

I worked with a client whose part required a tolerance of ±0.005 mm on a feature that only functioned as a clearance hole. I pointed that out in the DFM review. Relaxing that single tolerance cut their machining time by 30%. They still got a fully functional part — just at a lower price.

Getting an Accurate Quote

The fastest way to get a realistic price is to send us your technical drawings or 3D CAD files. We review the geometry, material, tolerances, and quantity, then return a quote within 24 hours. Volume discounts apply for production runs — we reward clients who commit to larger quantities with lower per-unit pricing.

A common mistake I see: clients ask for a quote without specifying surface finish or secondary ops. That leads to a low initial number and change orders later. Better to include everything upfront. We can quote as-machined, anodized, bead-blasted — whatever your spec requires.

Send your CAD files to chen@aoomtech.com for a quote within 24 hours.
