CNC anti-slip tooth machining is not a standard milling job. We are creating precise ridges on a surface to provide grip. The cost covers programming time, tool wear, machine time, and the skill required to hold tight geometry on those small features.
A simple pattern on a flat surface is one thing. A diamond knurl on a curved contour is entirely different. The programming alone can take hours, and the machine path becomes complex enough that it may require a custom fixture.
Material. Aluminum is the most affordable. Move to stainless steel and the price can double because tool wear accelerates and cycle times increase. Titanium pushes it higher still.
Complexity. A straight-line knurl pattern is straightforward. A custom diamond pattern on a curved surface requires more programming time, special tooling, and potentially multiple setups. This is where quotes vary the most between suppliers.
Quantity. Setup cost is the biggest chunk for small batches. Ten pieces absorb that cost across ten units. One thousand pieces spread it thin. If you can increase your order quantity, your per-part price drops significantly.
For 50 to 100 pieces, here is what we typically see:
These numbers are a starting point. Every shop calculates overhead differently, so detailed quotes matter more than ballpark figures.
A great supplier will look at your design and suggest changes that make the part easier to machine without losing function. I once saved a client thousands by adjusting the tooth profile angle by five degrees. That single conversation eliminated a custom tool requirement and reduced cycle time by 30%.
Price is not the only metric. A slightly higher quote from a supplier who understands the functional need for anti-slip features can prevent costly rework later. Paying for experience upfront is almost always cheaper than fixing mistakes after production.
