CNC Cast Steel Machining: Our Process at AOOM

Cast steel combines the toughness of a casting with CNC precision. We see it used in heavy equipment, oil and gas infrastructure, and marine applications. The casting gets you close to final shape. Our CNC machines bring it to print.

We work with ASTM A27, A148, and other cast steel grades. The key is understanding how cast steel behaves under the cutter. It's harder than mild steel and can have inconsistent grain structure. Our approach accounts for that from the start.

Our Machining Stages

Material preparation. Every cast blank gets inspected for defects. We verify chemical composition and hardness before anything goes on the machine.

Programming. Our CAM engineers build toolpaths specific to cast steel. We pick carbide inserts with specialized coatings. Coolant strategy is critical here.

Rough machining. We remove bulk material fast while managing heat. Heavy-duty CNC mills and turning centers handle the density without chatter.

Finishing. Final passes hold tolerances within ±0.005 inches. We use multi-axis machines so complex features are aligned in one setup.

Inspection. CMM, optical comparators, and surface roughness testers check every critical dimension. Full traceability documentation ships with every order.

Real Projects, Real Results

One client in power generation needed pump housings in cast steel. The parts saw high pressure and needed leak-tight sealing surfaces. We machined the mating faces to a 1.6 μm Ra finish. They passed pressure testing on the first try.
