Long shafts are some of the trickiest parts we machine. The challenge is simple: keep everything straight over several meters while cutting metal at high speed. I've seen many shops struggle with this.

What Makes Long Shaft Machining Hard

Three things cause trouble: deflection, vibration, and thermal expansion. A shaft that's four meters long will flex under its own weight. Vibration gets worse as length increases. And heat from cutting causes the part to grow.

We fight deflection with advanced fixturing and steady rests placed at optimal points. Toolpaths are programmed to balance cutting forces. Our coolant system manages heat so the part stays dimensionally stable.

A recent client needed hydraulic press shafts in 4140 steel. Length was 2.8 meters. Tolerance was ±0.02 mm over the full length. We hit it on every piece in the batch.
