I've been on both sides of this table. I've quoted thousands of small-batch jobs. I've also seen clients come to us after bad experiences with other shops.
A reliable CNC machining service for small-batch work is hard to find. Most shops want production runs of 500 or 1,000 parts. They don't have the flexibility, the machines, or the patience for your 20-piece prototype order.
Here's what I tell clients about finding the right partner.
The first sign is obvious: do they even quote small batches without a sigh?
A good shop will respond to your RFQ within 24 hours. They'll ask questions about tolerances, material, and surface finish. They won't try to upsell you into a quantity you don't need.
We run small-batch jobs every day at AOOM Technology. From 1-piece prototypes to 500-part production runs. We don't treat small orders as charity work. They're our specialty.
For small batches, you need shops with CNC mills and lathes that handle rapid changeovers. If a shop has only five big horizontal machining centers, they're probably not set up for your 10-part job.
We run a mix of 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC mills plus live-tool lathes. That means we can handle most geometries without special fixturing that drives up your cost.
This matters more than you think. I tell clients: "The best shops ask questions before they cut metal."
If a shop takes your CAD file and quotes it with no questions, they probably missed something. A reliable shop will ask you about critical dimensions, surface finish expectations, thread standards, and edge break requirements.
We always reach out if a feature on the print is unclear. It's better to spend 10 minutes on a call than to scrap a part and start over.
For small batches, you don't get statistical process control with 30-piece samples. You need 100% inspection or at least first-article plus spot checks.
We inspect every small-batch job. First-article is fully dimensionally checked. Then we do in-process checks on a schedule based on the part tolerance.
Ask potential shops: "How do you verify my parts are within tolerance?" If they can't give you a clear answer, move on.
A shop that mostly cuts aluminum might struggle with stainless steel. A shop that specializes in plastics might not know how to handle heat-treated tool steels.
We machine everything from 6061 aluminum to 17-4 PH stainless to PEEK plastic to titanium. Our programmers know the feeds, speeds, and tooling for each material.
ISO 9001 is a good indicator of process control. But for small-batch prototype work, experience and communication matter more.
We hold ISO 9001:2015 certification. But I tell clients the real quality comes from our machinists' experience, not the certificate on the wall.
A reliable shop packs parts carefully and ships on time. We've had clients tell us horror stories about parts arriving loose in a box, scratched or damaged.
We individually bag, label, and foam-pack every batch. Small parts get anti-static bags and proper cushioning.
We quote within 24 hours. We answer emails the same day. We send progress updates on longer runs.
If you need a small batch of precision CNC parts, we're the shop that actually wants your business.
